If you would like to start your own landscaping company, all you need is a lawn mower and a weed trimmer. You can start small and slowly increase your business. Start with a few customers until you can afford to buy more equipment. Develop a business plan to keep your business growing. Many people don’t have the time or energy to maintain their yard. You can target older neighborhoods where senior citizens live. Price your services to be competitive with other landscaping companies in the area. Once you have several weekly clients, buy more equipment such as leaf blowers and other needed equipment.

Start hiring people to help you as soon as you can afford it. This will help you gain more customers. Offer other landscaping services such as cleaning out flower beds and planting garden plants. Target commercial customers as soon as you have enough regular customers. Commercial customers include shopping centers, business parks and apartment buildings. These commercial customers use landscaping services to improve the look of their properties. With a combination of regular and commercial customers, your business is set to make you a nice profit. Buy a good accounting software program to keep track of your expenses and payments.

If you have a knack for architecture and design but don’t want to spend all day sitting at a desk, there are a large number of colleges in the United States that offer degrees in landscaping. The programs offered are normally called landscape architecture or horticulture ornamentation.

If you wish to learn more about similar degree programs, a variety of community colleges across the United States offer landscaping degrees and programs. These programs normally consist of associate’s degrees and certificate programs. Once you have chosen a career path, it’s best to finish your two year degree and then transfer to a four year university.

Public and private universities in every state offer landscaping programs. Bachelor’s degrees are widely available while only some school offer master’s degrees in similar areas of study. If you choose to only finish a landscaping certificate program, skip the community college courses and head straight for a short program that’s offered at a four year university.

Accreditation is also an important factor when choosing a landscaping degree program. You should choose a school that is recognized by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board to ensure you get the best education possible.

Many people worry if planting new trees will end up eventually threatening their home. This is not something that can be answered with a definitive yes or no, but is rather dependent on the application of some good common sense. Were someone to plant a new oak tree right above the home’s sewer line, for example, this will eventually turn out to be a problem.

What this illustrates is that there are two basic threats that trees can offer to the structure of a home. They can send roots burrowing into and under places that cause problems, such as foundations, sewer lines, driveways and sidewalks. They can also topple over in a high wind and crash down on the home or on vehicles parked in the driveway.

This is not to say that trees on a property are a bad idea. Apart for their majestic beauty, they can shield a property from wind and other damaging weather events such as hail. They can also provide a welcome cooling effect due to the shade they offer in the summer. In addition to which, trees generally increase the resale value of the property.

With these basic facts in mind, new trees need to be strategically located in places that will maximize their utility while simultaneously minimizing the risks associated with trees. Most trees are sold with a tag on them that specifies how high they are expected to grow and how wide their root system is likely to spread. Couple this basic information with a timely call to the local underground utility locating service. This gives you all the information you need to ensure that you do not dig up buried phone, cable, electrical, gas or water lines in the process of planting your new trees.

With these specific areas obviously off limits to planting, next measure how far away your trees need to be in order to assure the safety of your home. If a tree is expected to reach a mature height of 30 feet, you probably want to plant it at a minimum of 25 feet away from the house. Thirty feet would obviously be best, but most homes can tolerate a few scratches from branches in the event that a tree blows over. Stay away from areas where the roots can make their way into the sewer lines or invade the foundation and concrete work.

Beyond that, you can safely enjoy the utility savings and the splendor which new trees can bring to your property.

A landscape professional is either a registered Landscape Architect or a Landscape Contractor. Both require registration or certification with a regulatory state agency and are renewable yearly or every two years.

A Registered Landscape Architect is a professional who designs outdoor spaces, both public and private that are functional and decorative. They incorporate the combination of the environment and outdoor vegetation combined with hardscapes such as walks, decks and pools to name a few of the elements. Registration requires a certain level of education and a certain amount of work experience. The Landscape Architect candidate is required to pass a registration exam regulated by the state licensing board, and registration is subject to renewal on a regular basis.

A Landscape Contractor builds and maintains the outdoor spaces designed by a Landscape Architect. They also work with property owners to provide maintenance for the outdoor vegetative elements, even if a Landscape Architect is not involved. Most states require a Landscape Contractor to be licensed through the examination process. The prerequisites in most states to take the necessary exam is to complete a program in construction management and have a certain number of years of practical experience in the area of landscape contracting of interest. Licenses are subject to renewal on a regular basis without taking the exam again.

When choosing to use a professional landscape company, there are some points you should consider up front. The first is whether or not the company carries insurance for their workers and for the company itself. In related questions, you could also ask if they provide an estimate before hand and what they charge if the project takes longer than what they estimated or they need additional materials. The ability to communicate with the company is essential because you do not want unexpected charges after the job has been completed.

When looking for a good landscape company, you want one that offers a variety of services. Many landscapers can add fill in an area where the land is low. They can also build stone or brick walls to keep water from low-lying areas from running into the yard. Many professional landscaping companies have the ability to design a variety of outdoor structures as well as plant trees, flowers and shrubs. These expert builders can often create outdoor patios complete with stone fireplaces or fountains. Depending on the company you hire, they could also be capable of installing an outdoor swimming pool. From shade trees and lilac bushes to decorative stone walkways, today’s landscaping incorporates a variety of items.

Most homeowners just do not have enough time to landscape their yards. Lawns can be left looking brown and unkempt, and trees and bushes become overgrown. The best way to make sure that this does not happen is to hire a landscaping company. There are thousands of these businesses all over the United States, and a few questions should be asked to make sure that the right one is chosen.

Different landscaping companies will offer different types of services. It is wise to ask what these services are, because some companies will not provide lawn grooming, watering and fertilizing. Some people want these things to be done as well as some flower or bush planting. A variety of landscaping businesses might need to be contacted to find the right services that match homeowner needs. Once the services are figure out, the costs of landscaping and the number of visits should be asked about. Some landscaping companies may not fit into homeowner budgets, or they may only come to the home every now and then. A landscaping business that comes every week and that charges reasonable prices is the best choice.

After services, fees and weekly visits are worked out, the homeowner should hire the landscaping company and keep track of lawn and yard progress. This will determine whether or not the landscapers are doing a good job.

A landscaper can make a world of difference in your lawn’s appearance. However, to get the most from your landscaper, you need to follow a few important steps.

Check references:

Before a landscaper begins work, check all their references thoroughly. This will give you valuable information in regards to the work ethic and talent of the landscaper.

Make sure you have a plan:

Do not be vague when explaining what you want your landscaper to do. Because, it will only lead to frustration, if a landscape plan is not established before work begins. Set up a schedule for weekly maintenance work and discuss long-term goals as well.

Listen to your landscaper’s advice:

The landscaper is the professional when it comes to lawn care. If they tell you a certain plant will not survive in the location you are determined they place it, listen to them because they do know what they are talking about. After all, if you are not going to heed their advice, why hire them in the first place?

Be realistic:

Do not expect your landscaper to be able to reform your dried out lawn into lush green carpet overnight. Ask them to be honest on how long they expect their transformation to take, and be patient with them as the process unfolds.

When you are in need of hiring a landscape company, you will want to make sure that you hire a company that has experience. Ask the landscape companies that you are considering for a list of references of the clients that they currently take care of and check with those clients to hear their input.

Also, it is a wise idea to make sure that the landscape company that you are considering is bonded and insured. You never know when something is going to happen, they could be mowing your yard and a rock fly through your window and break it costing you in repairs if they are not bonded.

Make sure that you are able to get a landscape company that is going to perform your lawn care work to your specifications, if you want your sidewalks edged, make sure that they know it. If you would like to have your fence line weed eated with each mowing, make sure that you tell them that too. If they have problems with your specifications, they may not be the landscape company for you. You should have no problem finding a landscape company that will perform their work to meet your request.
